College Signing Day

Posted 11/12/2009 7:05 AM CST by my caddie from Spirit.

Yesterday was college signing day for many Spring sports, including golf. The biggest news of course was Cory Whittset's signing with Alabama. Cory had committed a few months back and when discussing it, I always got the same response...Alabama??? Besides not really being known as a golf power, many people are of the opinion that Texas kids should sign with Texas schools. Some folks get outright belligerent when they see our homegrown kids go to school out of state. Even though I am Texas born and bred and proud to be a Texan, I am of the opinion that signing elsewhere is perfectly OK. Kids like Cory have put in years of hard work and dedication and they have earned the right to sign anywhere they choose. Each kid has a different reason. College is all about broadening one's horizons and expanding his or her world view. Granted, Tuscaloosa could hardly be considered a world view expanding location, but whatever Cory's reasons may be, they are valid for him.

There were a bunch of college coaches following various players this past week at The Spirit. A Texas coach was following our group. My guy Lucas was concerned that maybe he was following him. Texas recruited Lucas pretty hard but Lucas had already committed to Florida State. He may also have been there watching Jordan Spieth who was playing in our group. Jordan is the number one ranked junior in the country and lives in Dallas. Lucas, who is not from Texas, said he thought Texas had great facilities but Austin was just not his kind of place. He also considered Arizona St. (too hot), Oklahoma St. (too cold), and the aforementioned Florida St. (just right for Lucas). And that is the key. FSU was just right for Lucas Bjerregaard, but it is not just right for everyone. Alabama was right for Cory and Texas may be just right for Jordan, but if the kid decides that UCLA or Florida or Oklahoma is right for him (OK, maybe not Oklahoma, he did seem like a pretty bright young man) then we should all be happy that he is going forth and taking a little bit of Texas with him. Not only are our outstanding young men and women able to experience other parts of the country, but other parts of the country are being exposed to our best and brightest...except Oklahoma of course. We don't want them going there and then coming home and having us having to inevitably support them public assitance programs!

Thoughts???
